Bulk Sampling
Application
Bulk sampling can provide invaluable information, especially when air sampling is limited or insensitive. It can confirm the presence of microbial activity and identify the actual sources of contamination that will ultimately aid in remediation.
Any type of environmental materials that include settled dust, sections of wallboard, pieces of duct lining, carpet pad segments, return air filters, fabric, wood, wallpaper, clothing, insulation, etc., can be considered bulk samples. These bulk items are submitted as samples and analyzed for microbial contamination. The bulk sample should be a representative section ofthe contaminated area and weigh about 25 grams.
Required Equipment
- Zip-type Bag or 4 oz. Glass Jar
- Sterile Cutting Tool
- Gloves
Sampling Methods
- Using gloves cut bulk samples aseptically from the source and place in a clean container. Samples to be tested for VOCs or fecal sterols should be placed in a glass jar. Refer to page 18 for bulk sampling method for endotoxins. The approximate weight of sample should be 25-50 grams.
- Caution should be taken to prevent cross contamination of bulk samples with other indoor air samples or other possible contaminates that may somehow affect analytical results.
Bulk sampling can be semi-quantitatively screened or cultured for colony forming units. The screens have shorter turnaround times since there is no time delay for growth.
Quality Control
Multiple samples should be collected for comparison studies to include at a minimum a suspect and non-suspect sample.
Microbial growth on building materials is easily aerosolized by physical activity. All sampling of this nature should be done subsequent to any air sampling. Any air samples collected after surface or bulk sampling may be skewed due to bioaerosols aerosolized from the sampling event.
Safety Precautions
Caution should be exercised when collecting bulk or surface samples in occupied areas. If this type of sampling is to be performed, potential exposures to occupants should be addressed and appropriate controls implemented if necessary.
The sample collector should avoid coming in contact with any biological material. Protective equipment may be necessary.
